besar, sehingga perlu dibuat suatu capping agent.
Pembuatan natrium
silikat melalui dua metode, yaitu pemanasan dan pengasaman. Pada metode
pemanasan, limbah geotermal dipanaskan hingga 700°C selama 4 jam.
Sementara pada metode pengasaman, limbah geotermal 50 gram
ditambahkan HCl 0,6% sebanyak 500 mL. Masing - masing kemudian
pemanasan memiliki luas permukaan 56,972 m2/g, volume pori 0,072 mL/g,
distribusi dominan jari–jari pori 1,605 nm, dan radius pori rata-rata 1,494
nm . Sedangkan perlakuan preparasi silika gel pengasaman memiliki luas
permukaan 37,026 m2/g, volume pori 0,045 mL/g, distribusi dominan jari –
ABSTRACT
Silica gel is widely used, for example as an adsorbent and moisture
absorber. In the manufacturing process, silica gel easily agglomerates and
causes silica in large particle sizes, so a capping agent needs to be made.
Smaller sized silica gel is expected to bind more metal ions, because it has a
larger surface area. In this study polyethyleneglicol (PEG) was used as a
capping agent. In addition to the capping agent, the effect of heating and
acidification on the formation of silica from the extraction of Dieng
geothermal waste, Central Java, Indonesia was also examined. The purpose
of this study is to examine the effect of heating and acidification on the
synthesis of silica gel on the adsorption ability of Zn2+ metal ions.
The methods in this research include preparation, preparation of
sodium silicate, silica gel synthesis and adsorption of Zn2+ metal ions.
Preparation is done by cleaning geothermal waste with distilled water and
roasted for 8 hours at a temperature of 100°C. The results obtained are
crushed and sieved with a size of 150 mesh. Making sodium silicate through
two methods, namely heating and acidification. In the heating method,
geothermal waste is heated to 700°C for 4 hours. While in the acidification
method, 50 grams of geothermal waste was added with a 0.6% HCl of 500
mL. Each was then added 4 N NaOH and refluxed at 80°C for 3 hours to
obtain sodium silicate. The sodium silicate obtained was added polyethylene
glicol (PEG) and reacted with 1 N H2SO4 dropwise to pH 3, 7, and 10. The
results obtained were characterized using Fourier Transform Infra Red
Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas Sorption Analyzer (GSA) to determine the
group function and distribution of pore sizes and those in silica gel. The
synthesized silica gel is then used for Zn2+ metal ion adsorption. The
concentration of non-adsorbed Zn2+ residual metal ions was determined by
Atomic Adsorption Spectroscopy (AAS).
From the research results obtained silica gel from heating and
acidification treatment with the addition of PEG 6000 as a capping agent.
FTIR analysis on silica shows the presence of Si-OH stretching spectra at
wave numbers 953-956 cm-1 and Si-O-Si asymmetry stretching vibrations at
wave numbers 1088-1089 cm-1. The results of the GSA analysis showed
silica gel by heating silica gel preparation treatment had a surface area of
56.972 m2/g, a pore volume of 0.072 mL/g, a dominant distribution of a pore
radius of 1.605 nm, and an average pore radius of 1.494 nm. Whereas the
treatment of acidification silica gel has a surface area of 37.026 m2/g, pore
volume 0.045 mL g, dominant distribution of pore radius of 1.604 nm, and
average pore radius of 1.519 nm. Silica gel with a pH variation of 3 heating
and acidification treatments which had the highest adsorption power were
90.89% and 89.54%, respectively.
